The team wanted to find a way for the very young, to our seasoned senior citizens, and those with limited motilities to enjoy robotics with the MJs.
In the beginning – a community outreach bot
In fall 2015, Team 2068 built a robot utilizing a guitar hero controller that can throw a ball. The team wrote a program in C++ that allowed the guitar to manipulate the intake. We believed it was a great way to introduce our robot into the community and to get everyone excited about operating a robot. We introduced the innovative way to drive the robot at the Orbital (MJs’ Sponsor) company picnic. We let the Orbital employees and their families control a robot, most of them for the very first time. The response was very positive. It gave us the idea to use our robot to create excitement for STEM and robotics while giving back.
2016-17 – Engaging students will physical limitations
Who would benefit most from getting to use our robot? We focused on making a difference in our own high school. Team members contacted the Supervisor of Physical Education, along with Mr. Tolson, OP’s Adapted Physical Education (APE) teacher. The students in Mr. Tolson’s APE program have limited to no physical mobility. Mr. Tolson came to the robotics shop. We showed him our idea in hopes of partnering together. The goal was to learn, to develop plans, and provide special need students the ability to use our robot. Needless to say, Mr. Tolson became emotional when he saw our idea. In all actuality, this would be the first time his students would have the ability to throw a ball due to their limited mobility/ handicaps. Through the team’s collaboration and determination, his students are capable of driving the robot in multiple ways based on their ability and their interests. Students can use an Xbox Controller, a Guitar Hero guitar, or a button box that sits on a lap or wheelchair footrest. Our first student driver, JoJo is from the APE program. It was heartwarming to see how excited he was to drive Stinger! How can you not want to see this every day?
The team has made this amazing platform available to anyone. The program and ways to utilize various type of controllers are listed below. It is our sincere hope that you will use these to create a Stinger of your own to change the way your community sees robotics. Our programs and information are free of use to anyone.
